UMPIRE UPDATES I need all umpires who have changed any personal contact information in the past year to please call, send an e-mail. I need this information to update your profile in the database. This way, I can be assured of contacting each of you without any difficulties... This information I am looking to update would be; Home Address, Home or cell Phone Numbers, Pagers, E-mail address Etc.... It is important for you to keep this information updated in my database. Otherwise, I will not be able to schedule you for games, inform you of upcoming events, or be able to inform you of any organizational business. Accepting an Assignment What Does it Mean to You? 1. It is a great responsibility that we assume when we accept a game assignment. Not just accurately logging in the time, date and field location of the assignment, but in terms of fully understanding your role as the official, particularly in a game where you are the only umpire. 2. As an association we educate, train and yes even nurture our cadre of umpires, throughout the year. As enablers, we build up our umpires, imbuing them with information, mechanics and techniques to make them better at what they do. But only to a point, because the competence an official displays comes from within. 3. Arriving at the game in a timely fashion is a given. It is the easiest thing you do. Wearing proper equipment and looking the part is also a simple aspect of your responsibilities. Your skill, however, will be tested in your game control skills. Not in regimented, "I'm in charge" fashion but in your fluid and flexible pace, your understanding of the skills level adjustments you will make in the game you are working. The respect for all involved, including the players regardless of age or ability level. This takes great experience and a focused awareness on your part and will start with the first game you officiate. 4. You will begin to know that you are on the right path when you walk onto a field and are greeted warmly based on your previous experience with that group or community. Why? Because your game control skills matched up well with the skills level of play and therefore you were judged by all those who saw you work, as a competent official. 5. To sum up, being a professional umpire at the amateur baseball or softball level requires significantly more of you than knowledge of the rules, good mechanics, and a consistent strike zone. It requires unwavering confidence in yourself, and your ability to tailor your officiating skills to the game being played, coupled with a genuine desire that you would rather be nowhere else than where you are right now for the next few hours! "COMPLIMENTS AND COMPLAINTS" Compliment Subject: Jim Crossey #53 Hello Frank, My name is Gina Gray and my son plays for the Padres in the National League. I just wanted to drop a note about Jim Crossey #53. He was our umpire in last night’s game, 5/4/10, against the Giants. He was fantastic. I have never seen an Ump introduce himself to all the kids on both teams, as well as the coaches. He would throw off his mask and run out to the plates to watch a play before making a call. He is the best I have seen thus far and all the parents, on both teams, agreed. Just thought I would pass that along and give him a well deserved pat on the back. These Umps can take a lot of heat so I wanted to give one some positive feedback. Please let me know that you received this and that I am contacting the correct person. If I should send this along to someone else, please give me their information. Thanks again. Gina Gray . Compliment Frank, Jim did our game last night and as I am sure you know he does a great job. He calls and manages the game very well and is great with the kids. He is a good guy. I think the quality of the umpires we have seen this year is probably the best in my time at Brookline. Thanks. Bernie Compliment Thanks for coming up to Devon last night, DSLL is pleased to have Tri-County Umpires as part of our league. I appreciate the professional approach of your organization. Lee McConnell Compliment Hello Frank, I just wanted to take a moment and thank you and your team for your instruction at the recent umpire clinics. Although I felt my background in playing, umpiring, and broadcasting baseball games would have already taught me what I thought I needed to know, having you, Goose, Pete, and Chris leading these classes was a terrific learning tool. As I mentioned earlier on the phone, I think the best things that came out of the clinics were learning the real mechanics of umpiring, and being given the opportunity to improve my skills each week. Sometimes it takes 30 people critiquing you to realize your mistakes, and to do a better job. I told you that I have been to several “clinics” over the years, and even spent a winter break at Harry Wendelstedt’s Umpiring School in Florida (Covering it as a journalist, not a participant). In three-and-a-half sessions (due to rainout), your team gave more actual instruction than some of the others could in 3 weeks! You should be very proud of the organization you have built, and I hope to remain a part of it for years to come. Looking forward to a stress-free season, Dave Ernay Compliment Frank, I know you don't always hear when a umpire is doing the right and good things. But Mike did our game on Thursday and he was excellent. Nice working with your group over the years, and Mike was an excellent example of what's special about baseball. Thank him again for me! I hope to see him every game. Joe Wood Cubs NPAA Majors Compliment Frank, I forgot to tell you when we spoke today. I'm not sure of the umpires name. He did my game Wed 4/26 at Marshall Rd. He was very professional, on time and did a real good job! Thanks Frank Compliment Hey blue - I am coach of the Exton Majors Softball Lightning team. We played Great Valley 1 yesterday at East Goshen field at 3pm. I wanted to applaud the umpire for several reasons. I forgot his name already but have seen him around the fields for years. He has white hair and a beard. Anyway, due to a scheduling mixup that was the teams' fault, not the umpire's, he showed up at the 1pm game which already had an umpire. He waited until we showed up at 3pm and then agreed to umpire our game which lasted until after 5pm. During the game, he was very professional and he treated the girls with great respect. He got hit with several pitches and foul balls, two of which severely bruised his left arm. Instead of bailing on the game after all of that, he packed his left arm with ice and continued to call a great game from behind the plate. It was a tremendous example for everyone at the game, especially the young girls who witnessed a real trooper. I am quite sure he does it for the love of the game but I wanted to pass this along so that he is aware of the impression he had on the Lightning team, their coaches and parents. A job well done. Please let him know. Thanks. Best regards, Paul T. Porrini
